Grade – Why it might be chosen instead of 904L
316L – A lower cost alternative, but with much lower corrosion resistance.
6Mo – A higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is needed.
2205 – A very similar corrosion resistance, with 2205 – having higher mechanical strength, and at a lower cost to 904L. (2205 not suitable for temperatures above 300°C.)
Super duplex Higher corrosion resistance is needed, together with a higher strength than 904L.

Hot work should proceed after uniform heating to 2000-2200 F. Doe not work the material at less than 1800 F. Full annealing should follow any hot work to re-attain maximum ductility and corrosion resistance.
Most common fusion and resistance methods may be employed. For maximum corrosion resistance, it is recommended to use filler metals of equal or higher alloy content. Alloy 904L can be readily welded by most standard processes. Austenitic plate materials have a homogeneous austenitic structure with an even distribution of alloying element.
SS 904L Plates is quite ductile and forms easily. Although higher forces are required, SS 904L will respond in a similar fashion to other austenitic stainless steels like 304, 310, 316 or 317. Most common operations can be successfully performed.
Slow speeds and positive feeds will minimize this alloy’s tendency to work harden and glaze. Use chip breakers where possible to overcome problems with long draggy chips. The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L makes it less machinable than 410 and 304 stainless steels.
